Renovation News From Msgr. Statnick
Thank you to Bishop Brandt for being with us at all of the Masses last weekend to offer words of encouragement and explanation for our
capital campaign. As our bishop, he is our chief shepherd and the symbol of unity to lead and guide our local
church. The Cathedral renovation project is an important part of his goals and vision for us as the Cathedral parish and for the
whole diocese. As Bishop Brandt reminded us, we hold the privilege of being the "Mother Church" for the diocese, but with
this distinction also comes the responsibility to do our fair share of supporting the Bishop in this important project. Participating
in the capital campaign is a very concrete way we can do so.
I would also like to thank Eric Kocian who spoke on the capital campaign at all of the Masses two weeks ago. Eric’s words were an
inspiration to all who heard them and a call to respond in faith to the unfinished work of the Risen Lord in our midst. When a young
person like Eric is willing to witness without compromise to how important our stewardship of the faith is, all generations need to stop and
think about how they can do their part to preserve the legacy.
During the construction work in the church, the Blessed Sacrament will be removed from the tabernacle to a reservation space in the rectory for
weekdays. This move is being done for several reasons. First, we want to maintain a sense of reverence for the sacrament. It
is not possible on a construction site to have a modicum of silence for prayer and devotion. Second, we want to restrict access to the main
church as much as possible during construction to assure the safety of everyone. While some thought was given to reserving the sacrament in
the hall during the week, on further thought this alternative was rejected because the workmen will have to be passing through the hall for use of
the restrooms and for access to some of the building systems that are being repaired or replaced.
The Blessed Sacrament will be returned to the tabernacle in the church during the weekend schedule of liturgies, so that people can have access to it
for prayers and devotions at that time. During the week, we would ask that you access another parish church in Greensburg for this purpose while
construction is underway at the Cathedral.
In addition, during this construction period, any Funeral Masses of Cathedral parishioners past or present will be celebrated in the Saint
Joseph Chapel at the Bishop Connare
Center off of Route 30 East. The funeral directors in Greensburg have been notified of this temporary change, and they will work
with the Cathedral staff and the families of the deceased loved ones to make this change of venue as convenient and accommodating as possible.
As the weeks pass along, I am sure that there will be additional temporary modifications of our schedule and space to assure a safe and
efficient work environment for the improvements being made to the Cathedral. While this time will ask for patience and cooperation
from all of us, we must keep in mind the permanent improvements we all hope to realize from these sacrifices. A space renewed in its
beauty and capacity to serve the Body of Christ at worship will lift all of our spirits and give honor and glory to God. Working together
in a generous manner to support the effort with our time, talent and treasure will assure its success.
May God bless us during this period of construction. Let us pledge our prayers for a successful end to the capital campaign, for safety and
efficiency in the work areas, and for growth in our faith and virtue during this transition.
New Director of Liturgy and Music
Next weekend, we will welcome Mr. J. Christopher Pardini to our parish as the Director of Liturgy and Music. Mr. Pardini comes
to us from a similar position at Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh. As part of his position there, he also served as Artistic
Director of Music in a Great Space, the church’s concert series. Prior to his Pittsburgh position, Mr. Pardini was Senior Organist at
the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California.
Mr. Pardini will work with our parish choir, the Resurrection choir and the children’s choir, and he will coordinate the annual Cathedral
Concert series. In addition, he will direct the music for all diocesan liturgies under the supervision of the Office for Worship in
the Diocese of Greensburg.
His other interests include accompanist for The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Opera, adjunct instructor at Westmoreland
County Community College, and composer of liturgical music, the most recent being The New Century Mass which won a second place award
from the National Pastoral Musicians Conference this year.
Chris lives with his wife, Amy, in Greensburg. They have an eight month old daughter, Mia.
We look forward to sharing the benefits of his talents to enhance the quality and inspiration of our worship at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral.
A welcome reception for Chris is being planned for later in September.
Welcome, Herb Nicholson!
Herb Nicholson, a student in the Pastoral Ministry Certificate Program through the Diocese of Greensburg, will be doing his Practicum at the
Cathedral from September until mid-December. Herb will be working with Sandi Kocian in the social and care ministries. He will be
involved with various social outreach programs that we have here at the Cathedral in addition to hospital ministry and visiting the sick and
homebound. We welcome Herb and pray for him as he continues his learning experience in ministry.
